Now that you have a fundamental understanding of the world of electronic health records (EHRs), the other forms of health record systems, and the variety of health information technologies that are at your fingertips, it is time to engage in one final activity to bring your time with this resource to a close. Share your insights to the below prompt about your future with EHRs and health information technology (HIT)!

• How do you plan on incorporating EHRs/HIT as you become more involved in your healthcare?

Through this forum posting, learners will have an opportunity to demonstrate proficiency over all resource modules in a way that is relevant and stimulating of further learning (e.g. they can engage in peer discussions about topics of common interest in more detail than allowed for in the original modules). Furthermore, this forum activity will also allow our learners to engage in deep learning as they are not only regurgitating facts, which would be the case if a summative evaluation method like final examinations were used, but sharing and discussing their future plans with EHRs/HIT using learned concepts.

After reading the benefits of EHRs, share your experience with EHRs and comment on two other peers’ forum posts. If you have experience with EHRs as a patient, please share your experience, such as:

• Benefits that you noticed
• Difference between the paper-based and electronic medical records
• Suggestions for improvement of or wishes for future EHR systems

Through this forum activity, the learners will have the opportunity to make learning more personal and relevant. While sharing their experience, learners may come up with questions and answers, which helps solidify the knowledge.

In order to test your knowledge and understanding of the previous material, as well as to help other learners who may not have understood all the topics, complete the following activities.

Activity 1
Answer the following questions in the forum:

• What other ways could EHRs be beneficial to society?
• Have you experienced an instance where an EHR would have been useful?
• What improvements could be made to the concept of EHRs?

Activity 2
After reading and hearing about EHRs, post any questions you have in this forum, and feel free to share any experience you may have regarding EHRs in your life.

The objective of this activity is to encourage students to find an interesting video and to share it with the rest of your Pod. As well as encourage discussion between the students to explore the other videos posted by your Pod mates.

Within your Pod, have each person find a video (approximately 5 minutes) on YouTube about health records (it can be paper or electronic!). On this forum, you will be able to post and reply to your Pod mates. Once you have found a video, please write a short summary of the video and include one or two things you have learned from watching the video.

Please make sure to comment on at least one of your peers’ post.
